The Bakehouse was built between 1814 and 1815 at a cost of £1,032.16.10 and was one of several smaller buildings built by Soane at Chelsea Hospital. It was located on the west side of the West Road, between Soane’s Stables and Wren’s guardhouse. Ptolemy Dean draws attention to the similarity between these two neighbouring buildings: ‘Soane might have designed something in the manner of the stables, and yet there was a curious compromise. Yellow brickwork was used to match Soane’s stables, but then the elevation, window pattern and cornice were an exact copy of the Wren guard house… Only a wilful sculptural chimney rising above the ridgeline indicated Soane’s previous defiance of Wren.’

Soane’s bakehouse survives today on the west side of the Hospital.
