This plan of the Harley family estate at Brampton Bryan, in the far north-western corner of Herefordshire, shares the same provenance (SM volume 111) with many drawings associated with the Duke of Newcastle and the 1st and 2nd Earls of Oxford (Robert and Edward Harley). The two families were joined by marriage when Henrietta Cavendish Holles (1694-1755), daughter of the 1st Duke of Newcastle, of the second creation, married Edward Harley at Wimpole in August 1713. With this marriage came Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire, and a substantial London estate. This estate plan could be linked with two designs by James Gibbs for an aristocratic house with a large library wing on the east side (see below, 'Two designs attributed to James Gibbs for a large house with a library wing, 1713, possibly for Brampton House, Herefordshire': SM 111/33 and 26). The walled enclosure marked D. place behind the house, could be that indicated behind the house on both plans.
