Signed and dated

  • 1791

Notes

'Soane's extension was placed on axis on the rear face of an early-eighteenth-century house. The existing façade detail of the original house was strictly applied to the new extension. ... At the same time, the north-east corner of the original house was remodelled to form a new eating-room. ... Soane's work is still visible despite twentieth-century additions and alterations. The house is most recently used as an officers/ mess for army bases on nearby Salisbury Plain.' The 'lodge was rebuilt in the early twentieth century and is now part of the army base.' (P. Dean, Sir John Soane and the country estate, 1999, p.183)
