Pane of engraved glass, 1830

Opaque glass

Height: 210mm
Width: 196mm

Museum number: X257

Not on display

Curatorial note

This piece of opaque decorated glass is still in its original wrapping inscribed 1830 / Specimen of Embossed Glass / John Soane Esq / with care.

This pane, presumably supplied as a sample, does not appear in the inventories of Soane's collection drawn up in 1837 because it was in the first of three 'sealed repositories' created by Soane with instructions that they should not be opened until later in the 19th century. The first repository (drawers in the Dressing Room and Closet K on the ground floor) was opened on the anniversary of Mrs Soane's death, 22 November, in 1866. Curator Joseph Bonomi reported the contents to the Trustees, describing this item as 'a specimen of embossed glass'. It is not known why it was included.
