Curatorial note

This is one of a group of items displayed together on top of a framed cast in the Dome Area in a grouping seemingly designed to demonstrate the close connection between architectural or man-made sculptural forms and natural forms with a piece of ‘brain coral’ alongside casts of feet, and two trusses in the form of ribbon moulding which resemble vertebrae.

Similar (or possibly identical) elements were used by Soane in the £5 Note Office at the Bank of England, 1805-06 (see surviving photographs, for example in John Soane, Academy Editions Monograph 1983, facing p.74 (fig. 27).
