Curatorial note
One of a set of four surviving from Soane's time. In the late 1980s Peter Thornton hung these on the kitchen wall; in the 2000s they were taken down for the kitchens to be redecorated and put into store but on 13 January 2025, as part of the re-furnishing of the kitchens, they were re-hung on the south wall. We do not know their position in Soane's time but each one has a small ring for hanging on the wall and such covers can be seen hanging on the wall in George Scharf's image of another early 19th century kitchen (illustrated in Sue Palmer, At Home with the Soanes).
