Curatorial note
According to Soane's 1835 Description of his house Piranesi prints P31-P34 are the four engravings given to him by Piranesi himself in 1779 in Italy.
This print was certainly in Soane's collection by 1796 when it is shown in J.M. Gandy's view of the No. 12 Breakfast Room 14/6/1 hanging above the fireplace on the west wall (right-hand of three framed prints shown there).
This fragile work on paper could not remain on display in perpetuity. A facsimile is therefore on display in the Picture Room in the original frame.
