Inscription note: Line 1: the restoration of this line as currently on the urn is so uncertain that it should not be included.
Solin dates this inscription to the first half of the second century A.D.
We are grateful to Dr. Charlotte Tupman, a scholar of epigraphy (the study of inscriptions) undertaking postdoctoral research at King’s College London, who took squeezes of the inscriptions on antiquities in the Museum in 2007, for her transliteration, translation and notes/bibliography of the inscription on this piece.
Inscription translation: M(arcus) ... , who lived twenty-seven years, one month and twenty-four days. Publius Aelius Agathopianus, his guardian, set it up.

Curatorial note
The body of the vase, either side of the fillet moulding formed by incised lines flanking either side of the name plate, is enriched with highly stylized acanthus foliage; the bottom of the bowl is carved with convex fluting.

1929 photos show the urn with a more ornate lid, now lost. The object was photographed in 1986 with a different lid, which in 1929 was on M929 and in 1975 was back on M929.
