Design for the great room, 1763, as executed (1)

The great room, first used as a drawing room, was located at the centre of the north front of the original house, and Adam's designs were executed there in 1763. The use of the room was changed to the principal dining room when a new drawing room was installed in Adam's link to the Diocletian wing, during the 1770s.

The interior of the room was de-installed, and sold to Lloyds of London when the house was demolished in 1955. This did not include the original decorative painted panels, the ceiling, or the furniture, and only one of the two chimneypieces. The room was installed in the board room of the Lloyds building on Lime Street, London, in 1957, and then moved to the new, adjacent building in 1987. It was resized to fit in each instance.
