Variant designs for the ceiling for the drawing room, 1761-62, Adam volume 11/20 executed with minor alterations (3)

Notes

The drawing room is located in the south range of the house, adjacent to the dining room and the gallery.

The ceiling in this room, executed almost in accordance with Adam volume 11/20, imitates Raphael's vaulting ornament in the Villa Madama. Adam volume 11/20 shows gilding in alternate octagons, and this was not executed, but instead the ornament was painted in each octagon in multi-colours. The work on this ceiling was carried out between 1763 and 1764.

The medallions in this ceiling were painted onto heavy paper by Giovanni Battista Cipriani at a cost of two guineas each. He supervised their installation in 1765 himself.

The other highly ornamental feature of the room is the doorcase between the drawing room and the gallery, which is enriched with ormolu decoration by Diedrich Nicolaus Anderson.
