Purpose

Design for the chimneypiece for the front drawing room, c1769-70, executed with minor alterations at number 4 Royal Terrace (1)

Notes

This design was not executed at number 3 Royal Terrace, and instead a close variant of a chimneypiece designed for the front drawing room at number 5 Royal Terrace (Adam volume 24/37) was installed, with urns rather than oval enclosed rosettes in the capitals, survived to be photographed by the LCC in 1936, and was sold at auction in the same year.

This design was executed with minor alterations in the front drawing room at number 4 Royal Terrace, where it survived to be photographed by the LCC in 1936.

This design is a close variant copy of an unexecuted Adam design for the chimneypiece in the front drawing room at number 25 Grosvenor Square (Adam volume 22/264). The Grosvenor Square design is inscribed in pencil with the words, D[urham] Y[ard] / Front Drawing room, corresponding with the intended location of this design.
