Purpose

Design for the chimneypiece for the front drawing room, c1769-70, unexecuted (1)

Notes

This design was not executed at number 1a Royal Terrace. In this room a chimneypiece was installed which is a close variant of one designed for the back ground-floor room at both number 2 Royal Terrace (Adam volume 24/28) and number 9 Adam Street (Adam volume 24/18). The only difference is that the central tablet contains enclosed rather than unenclosed rosettes, and the tazza is supported by foliage rather than a small pedestal. It is identical to one of the chimneypieces installed at number 2 Adam Street. Both the chimneypiece at number 1a Royal Terrace, and that at number 2 Adam Street were photographed by the LCC in 1936 and 1937 respectively.
