Purpose

Design for Lord Stanley's closet ceiling, 1774, unexecuted (1)

Notes

Lord Stanley's closet was located on the ground storey of the house, at the far end of the rear wing, beneath Lady Stanley's closet, and adjacent to Lord Stanley's dressing room, and a private staircase adjoining Lady Stanley's apartment on the floor above. A plan of the house can be found in the second volume of The works in architecture of Robert and James Adam (part 1, plate 1).

According to the inscription on this drawing, the design was not executed. Moreover, this design is quite curious, as the room is shown to be circular rather than octagonal on Adam's plan in the Works. However, it is worthy of note that Adam volume 53/5 does refer to an Octagonal Dressg room immediately after the Occasional Bed Chamber (Lord Stanley's dressing room).
