Alternative designs for an entrance porch on the east front, October 1811 to April 1812 (5)
Notes
Once the decision had been made to move the Mausoleum to the west side, the office began drawing plans that articulated the central bay of the east front, as this side was the focal point of Soane’s desired quadrangle. The plans, elevations and perspectives within this section show the designs for an entrance porch on the east front. A modest single-storey structure is designed to mirror the plan of the Mausoleum on the west front. Drawings in the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A 3307.108) and Dulwich Picture Gallery (DPG G44), and the later Royal Academy exhibited drawings (SM P265) show a more elaborate two-storey structure designed with a tall lantern, mirroring the grandeur of the Mausoleum. The entrance porch was never executed due to a shortage of funds.
Soane also redesigned the Gallery skylights, making them octagonal rather than a series of circular and rectangular skylights.
