Designs for alternative gateways and lodges, unexecuted, c1764 (4)
Notes
These are the first four designs made for the gatehouse at Kimbolton. None of them were executed. They were intended to provide suitable entrances to the east and west of the house, on the St Neot's Road (now the B645) and Kimbolton High Street. Stylistically, they vary widely. What is clear, however, is that the the east gate on St Neot's Road (Adam volumes 51/87 and 30/144) only required a gateway and small lodge houses, but the west gate on Kimbolton High Street (Adam volumes 30/145 and 51/88) was required to function as a screen between the house and the town.
