J. T. Parkinson (fl.1810-40s): Langdown House, near Hythe, Hampshire 1817 (1). Unexecuted design for remodelling for George Tate

Notes

Parkinson's design is dated March 1817 and since Dance had his own drawing, it must be assumed that his own alternative designs follow after Parkinson's proposal. In any case, Dance draws on Whatman paper watermarked 1816 which must make this project one of his last commissions.

Neither of Dance's designs nor that of J. T. Parkinson was executed. Photographs (National Monuments Record, 1961) show an irregular two-storey yellow brick and slate house with, as the 1953 proposed Grade II listing notes, 'Deep eaves. Large portico porch with Doric columns.' As it turned out, the house was not listed since it belonged to the Admiralty and was used, in its final years, as the officers' mess of HMS Diligence, Hythe, a coastal forces base.

By order of the Admiralty, the house and estate, then 10.125 acres and 'readily accessible to the Industrial Development at Hythe, Marchwood and Fawley including the Esso Refinery, Monsanto Chemicals, International Synthetic Rubber, Union Carbide and Marchwood Power Station ... [and] completely surrounded by existing development all constructed during the Post-war period' was auctioned off on 14 November 1961 (despite the preservation interest of the local Parish Council), and subsequently demolished and developed for housing.

Little is known of Mr Tate except that his name appears in the register of New Forest Commoners AD 1792 and that his daughter, Miss Tate, took over the ownership of Langdown House in 1822. In 1849 the Hobart family took possession of the house and remained there until the 1930s.

Colvin gives a James T. Parkinson who flourished from 1810, practising first in London and from the early 1830s in Jersey.
