Model stand
Mahogany
Museum number: XF276
Not on display
Curatorial note
English, unknown maker, early nineteenth century altered in the mid nineteenth century, mahogany, with four turned columnar supports, on castors; possibly an early nineteenth century bed adapted by c.1850 to become a model stand.
This model stand has previously been thought to date from the early twentieth century but is now known to have been in existence, called the ‘Paestum Model Stand’, by 1850. Tim Knox suggested in 2007 that it might be the remnants of one of the Soane beds, cut down and adapted as so often happened in country houses. This seems a plausible suggestion. The shape of the ‘posts’ does not match those of Soane’s bed as shown in J. M. Gandy’s view of 1825 (Vol. 82, 31) but it could be a bed from one of the attics.
