Card holder, English, early nineteenth century

Height: 42cm
Width: 4.5cm

Museum number: XF190

Curatorial note

One of a pair with XF191. With seven slots behind semi circular tongues and inlaid detail; cross-banded edges on the semi circular tongues.

Compared to the two card racks in the Library/Dining Room, XF165 and XF173, which were probably off-the-peg pieces, this pair is a model of elegance and restraint. They may well have been designed by Soane and made for him by one of his regular cabinet-makers, either Martyr or Robins.
