Curatorial note

With four turned legs and pad feet. This table stands in the centre of the Breakfast Room and is shown in this position on the earliest design plans for No.13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields of 1812. It seems to be the table shown on plans of No.12 in 1792 in the centre of Soane’s Dining Room.1 It is almost identical to table XF178.

1 For example on SM 32/2A/7 dated August 28 1792. SM 32/2A/7 dated August 28 1792 and SM 32/3A/12 both show this table, with its measurements given as 4’1” x 3’7”: exactly the dimensions of cat. 128

Literature

SM Archive, Inspectress’s Report on Furniture, May 1955, p. 21
1 The report notes that ‘the use of the Breakfast Room table for the Curator’s meals over a long period before the war resulted in its being badly marked. Examination showed that the deeper burns could only be removed by spoiling the pleasant colour which the table has acquired with age, so surface cleaning and polishing only has been applied to this piece’.
