A metal candlestick identical to two others (X229 and X155). The existence of three identical plain candlesticks which do not appear in the original inventories seems to indicate that these are the remnants of what was perhaps a larger group used around the house in Soane's time but considered too mundane to be included in the works of art inventory and not appropriate for inclusion in the separate inventory of furniture and fittings. Note that the one surviving Soane period lamp also does not appear in the 1837 records.
This candlestick, with X229, is placed high up in the NW corner of the entrance hall, both fixed back to 19th century brass-headed pins in the wall. The pair appears in exactly this position in Soane's lifetime (1834-35 views) and therefore must always have been placed here. They were presumably used when additional lighting was required in the Hall at night and fixed back so that they would not be knocked off when servants climbed up to insert, light or extinguish candles.
