Cast of a weeping cupid from the Soane Tomb in St Pancras Gardens, London, plaster

Museum number: X129

Curatorial note

This cast was made at the request of A.T. Bolton, Curator of Sir John Soane's Museum 1917-45, when the tomb was repaired and cleaned in 1919. The only record of this appears in his publication, The Portrait of Sir John Soane, in a footnote on p.220. This is an important cast, recording the condition of the carving at that date.

The weeping cherub holds an extinguished and upended torch, symbolic of the snuffing out of the light of life.

Literature

A.T. Bolton (ed.), The portrait of Sir John Soane ..., 1927, footnote p.220.
