Cast of a weeping cupid from the Soane Tomb in St Pancras Gardens, London

1919

Plaster cast

Museum number: X129

Not on display

Curatorial note

This cast was made at the request of A.T. Bolton, Curator of Sir John Soane's Museum 1917-45, when the tomb was repaired and cleaned in 1919. A record of this appears in his publication, The Portrait of Sir John Soane, in a footnote on p.220. The 1930 Description of the House also refers to it on display in the basement, describing it as 'a cast of one of the panels of the Tomb as existing 1919'.

This is an important cast, recording the condition of the carving at that date.

The weeping cherub holds an extinguished and upended torch, symbolic of the snuffing out of the light of life.
