Curatorial note

Facing to the left, the Emperor sits astride a rearing brown horse which is richly caparisoned. Wearing armour and a sword, he sports a flowing curled wig and holds a sceptre. The panel is inscribed Carolus VI Rom. Imperator. Charles (1685-1740) became Emperor in 1711 and was king of Bohemia and Hungary. In 1714 he received the Spanish possessions in the Low Countries and presumably this panel celebrates this event. It therefore must be dated sometime after 1714, rather late for glass painting in the Netherlands.
