Curatorial note

This panel illustrates Pandora brought to earth, a subject from the ancient Greek author Hesiod’s, Works and Days. Flaxman used this design as the inspiration for one of his line illustrations to Works and Days, published in 1817. Soane acquired two versions (the other, M948, is larger).
