Curatorial note
This fragment and Soane M582 (Vermeule 77) are from the same base; another two fragments Soane S106 (Vermeule 75) and M590 (Vermeule 78) are from the same or matching bases. In this one and M582 (Vermeule 77) the enrichment is the same, but, particularly in this one, a fluted torus leading into the fluted half cavetto is visible as an upper course.
Rome; collected in Rome by Charles Heathcote Tatham for the architect Henry Holland during the 1790s. See Cornelius Vermeule, unpublished catalogue of the Antiquities at Sir John Soane's Museum, Introduction, transcription of Tatham letters, List 1, no.25 (showing that some items in Lists 1 and 3 came from a common source).
Literature
Tatham: Etchings, 11; Drawings, 4.
