Curatorial note

The centre and small sections of the curled acanthus leaves and stems either side of a composite capital.

Probably 3rd century work such as found in the Baths of Caracalla composite capitals: see the previous item Vermeule 42 (M56).

Provenance help-art-provenance

Probably Rome and perhaps collected by Charles Heathcote Tatham for the architect Henry Holland during the 1790s. See Cornelius Vermeule, unpublished Catalogue of the Antiquities at Sir John Soane's Museum, Introduction.
