Curatorial note

Soane acquired this painting shortly after the completion of his first purpose-designed Pciture Room at Lincoln's Inn Fields (constructed in 1819) and it may well have hung there although it does not appear in the surviving views of the room. When the current Picture Room was built this picture was hung in its present position at the top of the east wall, facing a portrait of the artist which hangs opposite, over the entrance door.
