The Death of General Wolfe

After 1776

Museum number: P433

Curatorial note

The American artist Benjamin West's celebrated painting of the death of General James Wolfe was exhibited in 1771 and had an immediate impact on how artists depicted contemporary events. This unauthorised engraving was inspired by William Woollett's engraving published in January 1776 - which was both large and expensive. The anonymous engraver of this print signs himself "P. Somebody" and indicates its low cost with the dedication to 'Lovers of Little Things and Cheap-Buyers.'
