Curatorial note

This much darkened drawing was framed in Soane's day and hung in one of the attics at 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields. It is now unframed (SM_59/10/4).

It is almost certainly Soane's 1783 Royal Academy exhibit no. 367 Design for a dairy. In the past drawing SM_13/7/1 has been incorrectly identified as the exhibited drawing but there is no evidence to support that. This drawing, on the other hand, shows unmistakable signs of having been framed, has an inscription as would be appropriate/required for exhibition and has also been varnished - a cheap alternative to glass. This explains the appearance of the surface: to assist with discerning what remains of this degraded image both black and white and colour images are attached to this entry. [Helen Dorey]
