Curatorial note

Portrait after a self-portrait of the artist John Hamilton Mortimer, sitting half-length in three-quarter profile to left with his artists palette and brushes in his hand. On the left is an easel with a picture on it.

This mezzotint engraving is in its published state but has been trimmed to fit the frame; the published version was inscribed, below, with date and publication details as follows: 'J.H.Mortimer Pinxit.'; 'Engraved by V. Green, Mezzotinto Engraver to his Majesty the Elector Palatine.' and 'Publish'd August 18th. 1779, by Mr Ireland, Maiden Lane, Covent Garden.'
