A date of 1760-70 was suggested after the work was taken out of its frame, based on the watermark (the letters L V [?G] beneath a shield crowned with a fleur-de-lys).

Curatorial note

This head of a boy is listed as hanging in the 'Oratory' on the second floor of Soane's house in the earliest inventories (1837). No artist is given.
