Curatorial note

This engraving is the pair to P363 and is also after a gouache attributed to Pierre-Antoine Baudouin although the artist's name is not recorded on the print. Baudouin was a pupil of celebrated French roccoco painter François Boucher, whose younger daughter he married in 1758.

Soane's inventories give this work the title recorded here but the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, records the title as La Rèprimande [The reprimand].

The original drawing in black chalk, pen and brown ink, watercolour and gouache, was sold at Christie's (Old Master Drawings sale 5228, 25 April 2007, Lot 407) under the title Les Amants Suprisés [The Lovers surprised].
