Geometrical elevation of the Entablature and Capital of the Temple at Tivoli ...

Pen and indian ink

Museum number: P279

Not on display

Curatorial note

In the AB inventory drawn up in 1837 this measured elevation was described as: Drawing in Indian Ink by John Soane 1779. Geometrical elevation of the Entablature and capital of the Order of the Temple at Tivoli drawn from actual measurement. It is in fact a copy of a drawing by George Dance SM D3/1/6 made in Italy in c.1762. Soane seems to have borrowed the drawing and copied it, presumably long before it entered his collection with the rest of the Dance drawings in late 1836.
