Curatorial note

This small top-lit ante-room, with its elaborate plasterwork and unusual tall canted skirting boards, was designed by Soane for his friend and fellow Royal Academician Sir Francis Chantrey in 1829, as a token of thanks for the bust of himself received as a gift from the sculptor in that year. It provided a fitting setting for visitors into Chantrey's scupture gallery which can be glimpsed in the distance in this view - with a full-size cast of the celebrated antique Laocoön group on display.
