Curatorial note

A delightful view of Londoners enjoying a fine day on Greenwich Hill, socialising and playing games, against the backdrop of Sir Christopher Wren's Royal Observatory buildings at the top of the hill, commissioned by King Charles II in 1675. The red time ball installed on the eastern turret in 1833 (dropped daily at 1pm as a signal of the time to boats on the Thames) is not present in this view, which must pre-date that year.
