Curatorial note

This is a drawing in sepia after an oil painting of 1563 by Jacopo Tintoretto, ‘The Worship of the Golden Calf’. The earliest inventories of Soane's collection (1837) say that the original painting is 'in the church of S. Rocco at Venice' whereas in fact it is in the Church of S. Maria dell ‘Orto (also known as the ‘Madonna dell ‘Orto’). They also attribute this copy of it to the celebrated Venetian painter Paolo Veronese (1528-88)
