The Irish politician Henry Grattan (1746-1820) came to London to read law before entering politics. He was the leader of the independent Irish government 1783-1800. Grattan opposed the Act of Union 1800 that merged the Kingdoms of Ireland and Great Britain, but later sat as an MP at Westminster from 1805-20.
