This beautifully detailed portrait of Mrs Soane's Manchester Terrier shows her sitting on a fringed hearth-rug, presumably somewhere in No 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields. The British Manchester Terrier Club noted in their 2012 exhibition leaflet that it 'shows her as a typical small black and tan Manchester Terirer type with fine limbs and happily without the cropped ears that were fashionable in the early 19th century'. The artist, Van Assen, worked for Soane on a regular basis, often sketching in the figures in large architectural perspectives.
