Curatorial note

Fixed within a recess in the ceiling of the Library; held in place by ball moulding surrounding the panel. The 1837 inventory describes it as 'On mahogany panel, in gilt frame'.

A letter from the artist to the Trustees of the Soane Museum in February 1837 mentions that the picture had been fixed in a temporary manner when installed so as to allow for its later loan to the Royal Academy exhibition.
