Curatorial note

This vase is one of a pair with NDR7. The two vases are made of hard-paste porcelain which is very finely decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze red with added gilding. Their fineness indicates a late 17th century rather than an 18th century date.

Imari is a style of porcelain named after the Japanese port from which it was exported to the West, beginning in the late 17th century; the vases were made in the city of Arita.
