Curatorial note

The 1837 inventories of the Museum record this object as a Fragment of a pillar (Hindu). Stone, with one copy (the AA inventory) adding that it might be Hindu or saracenic. Its exact origins are unknown but it was in the Monk's Yard in 1825 when it is shown in a watercolour view along with another similar fragment, much smaller, which does not survive.
