Charles Rossi (1762 - 1839), sculptor

Model for a group depicting a man defending a woman from a lion

Plaster

Museum number: MRR12

Curatorial note

This must be the model exhibited by the sculptor at the RA in 1819 under the title “An escape; as a sketch for a groupe”. It is included in the catalogue of an auction sale of Rossi’s sculpture held by George Robins on March 3 & 4, 1835 (Soane: Sale Cats., 23. 13), the animals there being described as “a Tiger and a Boa”. Soane, no doubt, acquired the model at this sale.
