Model of one of the columns of the ‘Basilica’ (Temple of Hera) at Paestum, cork

Museum number: MR10

Curatorial note

This is one of three models of differently-scaled columns from the great Greek Doric temples at Paestum south of Naples (see MR8 and MR9). Soane visited the site himself on his Grand tour in 1778-79 and acquired these models later. Together with the other two columns from the Paestum temples it is meant to show the variation in height, proportion and decoration between the Greek Doric orders that were used for the three temples. However, the models are not accurate. In reality, the columns of the ‘Basilica’ and the ‘Temple of Ceres’ are roughly equal in height, making the models misleading.
