Curatorial note
Frechenware 'bellarmine' or 'greybeard' jug. It is described in the 1837 AB inventory of Soane's collection as A glazed stoneware greybeard jug the handle broken found in excavating for the foundations of the new Board of Trade Offices in Whitehall 11 February 1824, 8’ 6” below pavement level. It is an example of an item found on the site of one of Soane's own architectural projects and retained by him for his collection - where he put it on display, appropriately, in his new Monk's Parlour, in the basement (constructed in 1824-25).
