Curatorial note

The 1837 inventory of the collection describes this as 'A piece of modern ornament, plaster'. It is a short length of the same moulding which Soane uses in a much longer run to define the edge of the lower part of the ceiling of the Monk's Parlour (the same interior in which this piece hangs). It is a moulidng that appears in many other Soane buildings. This small cast length in Soane's collection may have been the source, or perhaps it was a first sample.
