Curatorial note
This candlestick appears to be made of oak. The 1837 inventory entry for one of the pair, MP282, 'A Candelstick and Candle, as 280', makes it clear that the timber 'candles', painted in imitation of wax, placed in this pair of candlesticks are contemporary with the candlesticks, which were presumably therefore intended to be ornamental (in the Monk's Parlour) rather than for practical use.
