Curatorial note

This is one of a group of 12 Peruvian vases acquired by Soane in mid-1834 and said to have been collected by James Paroissien (1784-1827).

Of the group, two (this one and MP154) belong to the Moche I (AD1 - 100) and are rare examples outside Peru.

Literature

Hilda Clark, 'Historical Note: James Paroissien 1784-1827 Surgeon-General to the army of the Andes', British Medical Bulletin, Volume 7, Issue 4, 1951, p.345. This does not mention the Soane vases but provides a summary of Paroissien's involvement with South America.
