Although the early 1837 inventories of the Museum call this cast a 'Gothic shield or Escutcheon' it may in fact be cast from a section of medieval tracery. At the centre of the lozenge-shaped form is a small portcullis. The 1837 inventories appear to link this item with MP147 but the two are not a pair being different sizes and with distinctively different outer plaster frames. It may be that Soane simply hung two superfically similar casts together liniking them because of the motif of the central ornament within a square panel of small-scale tracery.
