Possibly made of latten, an alloy of copper and zinc resembling brass, hammered into thin sheets and usually used to make monumental brasses and church ornaments.

Curatorial note

This item was described in the 1837 AB inventory of Soane's collection as 'An Old Mortar (?) - metal'. Although it's provenance is unknown, it is shown in a watercolour of c.1825, Volume 82_75, a capriccio of various items from Soane's collection.
