Curatorial note

Cardinal Bernardino Lonati or Lunati (1451/52-1497) was a nobleman who sided with Francis I Sforza in the battle for succession to the Duchy of Milan. He was a friend of Cardinal Ascanio Sforza and on his recommendation was appointed Cardinal of Milan in 1493, being ordained a priest a few days later. He was one of the supporters of Cardinal Sforza in his conflict with the Pope. In 1496 he was appointed to assist the Captain General of the papal army in fighting against various Barons who intended to invade Rome. He was killed at the Siege of Bracciano. Cardinal Sforza paid for the cost of his funeral and for his fine monument in the Chapel of S. Caterina off the left transcept of S. Maria del Popolo.

Judging by the curls on the hair of the human face the cast is from the middle monopodia supporting the sarcophagus on which the effigy of the Cardinal lies, along with a section of the sarcophagus to its left.

Provenance help-art-provenance

Acquired by Sir John Soane from the architect Lewis Wyatt in 1834.
