Curatorial note

In his 1835 Description Soane commented that this caryatid from the Old Furnival's Inn is here preserved to shew the state of art when that structure was erected.

This building, close to Soane's home, on High Holborn was one that he obviously admired, commissioning Henry Parke to make a survey and produce a fine Royal Academy lecture drawing (a measured elevation) in the year that it was demlished, and collecting this caryatid, a head and a capital for his collection.

Provenance help-art-provenance

SM Archive 16/15: Statement of Account 'John Soane Esq... with David Laing' contains the following item '1818 For Fragments of Ornaments from the Old Buildings at Furnival's Inn, Holborn' £2.2.0'. The account lists further payments due in 1820 and is endorsed as settled on 29 April 1826.
